From Seeking to Serving: The Mindset Shift That Transforms Whatâs Next
If youâre at a crossroads in your careerâwondering whatâs next, what your next big move could be, or how to make the leap into something more meaningfulâyouâre not alone. Iâve had the privilege of walking alongside several clients recently who were in that exact space. Each of them ultimately landed CXO or executive leadership roles, but their real transformation started long before they signed their offer letters.
It began with a mindset shift: from seeking to serving.
Flip the Script: Youâre Not Just LookingâYouâre Offering
When weâre in a âseekingâ mindset, it can feel like weâre chasing something outside of ourselvesâwaiting for someone else to hand us the next opportunity. But the truth is, you have immense value to offer. Youâve got wisdom, experience, and heart. So instead of asking, âWho will hire me?â ask this instead:
My last three clients that have now recently landed CXO and executive leadership positions came to me wondering, âWhat is next for me?â
Some of them exited voluntarily. Some of them were exited involuntarily. And they had to take a moment and get some help through âWhat do I want? What is next for me? What impact do I choose to have?â And then we spent the time together to refine that clarity, put a plan in place, then help them land that next role.Â
I wanted to share some of the tips, tools, and strategies that were really successful for them.
Step 1: Be the observer not the judge of your emotions
If you're feeling stuck, feeling frustrated, maybe there's fear or worry wrapped in there. It's totally understandable. But what I want you to know is that there is wisdom in those emotions. Do not beat yourself up about those that can be very easy to do, but be the observer of them, not the judge. And so ask yourself if you are worried, or if you feel fear about what's next, or if you feel ...
If you are in a position where you are wondering what's next for you, either what's next in your current role, if you're going to exit⌠or even if you're going to make a major pivot⌠it's important to do this first.
Create some white space and to do it consistently, because I'm here to tell you that the answersâyou already know them.
I know it's frustrating when you're thinking about what's next. What happens is we (especially strivers) tend to keep ourselves very busy and really distract ourselves from the pain of not knowing. So the first thing to do, if you're pondering âwhat's next?â is to create consistent white space.
What does that mean?
Ideally, outside or in the morning, just open your windows. Listen to the birds. You know it can be walking⌠it could be sitting still⌠but just trying to keep your mind focused on the outside (the plants, the trees, the birds, what have you). Or, if you're sitting inside, it's just listening to the sounds of the outdoors with the windows open, and ...
In the latest Fearless Female Leadership interview, I had the privilege of speaking with Melissa Lewis, Senior Director of Talent Growth and Development at Facing History & Ourselves. We discussed the power of owning our worth and taking agency over our careers. Melissa shared powerful insights on stepping into leadership with confidence, navigating career pivots, and embracing the discomfort that often comes with growth.Â
Melissaâs journey has been anything but linear. From pursuing a PhD and rewriting entire chapters multiple times to making a bold shift from K-12 education to corporate learning and development, she has faced her share of setbacks. Yet, through persistence, courage, and an unwavering belief in her own value, she has continued to rise.Â
She emphasized that owning our worth isnât just about recognizing our valueâitâs about taking action. Too often, women wait for permission, hesitate to take risks, or allow external doubts to shape their career decisions. Melissa challen...
If youâre feeling stuck or a little uncertain about whatâs next, perhaps itâs time for a pause to relax and just be. Many times we try to âforce whatâs nextâ, when in fact we need the time, space, and rest for it to appear.
Just as we are intentional about how we prepare for high stakes or crucial conversations, itâs also extremely important to be intentional about how we rest and refuel our body and soul. Would we like to be alone, with friends, or with family? Would we like to be completely unplugged, work for an hour or two in the morning then play, or work somewhere different that fosters our creativity with some fun sprinkled in?
I took a trip recently to visit my son in Rhode Island and shot this message for you while I was there. Itâs so important to set clear intentions for both personal and professional interactions.Â
I encourage you to reflect on your own levels of intentionality, including your during your times of rest and recharging. What would make the time a 10 and h...
"Itâs the Nature of Babies to Be in Bliss.â
-Â Deepak Chopra
Life was pretty simple as a baby. We did not have expectations, responsibilities, comparisons, or judgments placed upon by ourselves or by others, and it was our nature to be curious, have our basic needs met, and follow our bliss or what made us happy. We didnât overthink, worry about what others think, or get stuck because of some past trauma (that we were possibly unaware of.)
Somewhere along the line, we were influenced by our parents, friends, siblings, society, media, colleagues, partners etc. So, when weâre feeling uncomfortable or like itâs time to shift, it can be challenging to truly determine with utmost clarity and confidence whatâs next or when to pull the trigger.
Whether youâre an executive thinking about leaving your corporate career, or you are a twenty-something about to wrap up college and trying to figure out whatâs next like my amazing daughter Megan, or somewhere in between, maybe itâs time to channel o...
