How to Step into Enterprise Leadership Without Waiting for Someone to Give You the Mandate

Most women executives don't get a memo announcing they're ready to lead at the enterprise level. There's no ceremony, no formal handoff. The mandate you're waiting for (the one that says you're in the room now) often never arrives on its own. It must be claimed.

That claiming starts with an honest look at how you currently create value.

Notice the pattern you've built your reputation on.

Many high-performing executive women rise because they're excellent individual problem-solvers. They go deep. They build. When they see a gap, they close it themselves... often faster and better than anyone else could.

One executive client put it this way: "I've realized that one of my natural patterns is to create value by going deep, solving difficult problems, and personally building when I see a gap, but I also recognize that I can't continue to be the person behind the scenes building everything."

That's the exact tension enterprise leadership demands you resolve. The skills that got you here (depth, ownership, hands-on mastery) are not the skills that get you there. At the enterprise level, your value isn't measured by what you personally build. It's measured by what you enable others to build, and by the quality of the decisions you're trusted to make.

Shift from building the stage to creating it.

That reframe is the mandate. Not permission granted from above... a decision made from within.

Three moves that signal you're ready before anyone tells you so:

1. Give away your best work. If you're still the go-to builder for the hardest problems, you're occupying space someone else should be growing into. Hand off the model, the analysis, the deck... and coach the person doing it instead of redoing it yourself.
2. Spend your calendar differently. Enterprise leaders are judged by the quality of their thinking time, not their output volume. Protect hours for strategic conversations, cross-functional alignment, and decisions that only you can make.
3. Show up in the room before you're invited. Ask for the seat. Contribute a point of view in the meetings where strategy gets shaped, even when it's not officially "your" meeting yet. Visibility earns invitation; invitation rarely precedes visibility.

Waiting for the mandate can become its own form of hiding... a socially acceptable reason to stay in the comfort of expertise rather than step into the discomfort of influence and even greater impact.
