Latest Blog Article: Culture Transformation for High Performing Teams with Brenda Dysinger, CHRO

Is Your Team High-Performing Enough for Where Your Company Is Going?

As companies scale, the biggest risk isn’t the market, the competition, or the technology. It’s a leadership team that can’t keep pace with the growth it created. In fast-moving, high-pressure industries, that gap gets expensive fast.

High performance at the top isn’t about having the smartest people in the room. It comes down to four capabilities. None of them are simply “soft skills.” They drive results.

THE FOUR CAPABILITIES THAT DRIVE GROWTH

  1.  High-stakes communication. When pressure hits, clarity wins. Whether you’re managing an incident, a customer escalation, or a strategic disagreement, leaders must challenge assumptions without triggering defensiveness and have hard conversations before problems escalate. How this is done is just as crucial as having the conversation itself.
  2.  Deep trust. Without it, executives and rising leaders withhold concerns, guard their departments, and hide mistakes. With it, teams speak candidly, disagree respectfully, and hold each other accountable, so energy goes to outcomes instead of office politics.
  3.  Collaborative problem-solving. Big problems don’t live in one department. Strong teams look past blame to root causes, share information across functions, and spot risks and opportunities early.
  4.  Team cohesion. Cohesion doesn’t mean everyone agrees. It means everyone commits to shared priorities and backs the decision once it’s made, even after initial disagreement. It also means that there is shared trust and respect between teams and between departments.

WHAT MISALIGNMENT REALLY COSTS

When these capabilities are missing, the damage goes well beyond interpersonal friction:

  • Costly mistakes. Critical information gets lost, and decisions stall.
  • Silos. Executives protect turf, and employees get mixed messages.
  • Talent loss. Recurring problems burn out your best people, who then leave.
  • Slower execution. Launches slip, initiatives stall, and competitors move faster.
  • Damaged customer confidence. Trust is the product. A leadership breakdown that customers can feel puts renewals, referrals, and customer advocacy at risk.
  • A growth ceiling. Teams that cannot function autonomously make the CEO and other ELT members the bottleneck, pulling leadership away from strategic planning for the future.

THE SILENT RISK

The most dangerous problem is the one nobody says out loud.

When executives don’t feel safe challenging each other, they leave meetings looking aligned while privately disagreeing. Assumptions go untested. Problems go unreported. Employees learn to stay quiet.

The absence of conflict isn’t a sign of a healthy team. It may mean your team is avoiding the conversations it most needs to have.

THE COMPOUNDING EFFECT

Scaling multiplies everything: more people, customers, products, and decisions. That means more chances for miscommunication to hit revenue, retention, and reputation. Leadership dysfunction doesn’t stay flat as you grow. It compounds.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Strategy alone doesn’t scale a company. Leaders do, when they can communicate under pressure, build trust, solve problems together, and move as one team.

Investing in these capabilities isn’t about creating a nicer workplace. It’s about protecting the business and building the leadership capacity your next stage of growth demands.

So ask yourself honestly: Is your leadership team ready for where your company is going?

DON’T WAIT FOR THE CRACKS TO SHOW

By the time misalignment shows up in missed targets, lost renewals, or a departing talent, you’re already paying for it.

ONE THING YOU CAN DO THIS WEEK

Run a gut check. Ask your leadership team, “What are we not saying in these meetings that are vital to our growth for next year?” If the room goes quiet, you have your answer.

If you’d like me to run a leadership team assessment for you, book a call.
